Beat Hawaiʻi Gas Prices with a MINI

An honest guide from your local MINI advisor

Want to beat Hawaiʻi gas prices? You're not alone. Just about every customer I talk to brings it up, and for good reason.

In early October 2026, AAA data put Hawaiʻi's average at $5.63 a gallon for regular, second only to California, and more than a dollar higher than a year earlier. When you live on an island, you can't just drive to the next state for cheaper gas. What you drive makes a real difference.

The honest math

Here's a simple comparison for someone driving 12,000 miles a year. Gas MINIs take premium fuel, so to be fair I added an estimated 50 cents a gallon to the MINI's cost. Your numbers will vary with how and where you drive.

  • Full-size pickup at 20 mpg: 600 gallons a year, about $3,378 (regular at $5.63)
  • Midsize SUV at 24 mpg: 500 gallons a year, about $2,815 (regular at $5.63)
  • MINI Cooper 2 Door at 32 mpg: 375 gallons a year, about $2,299 (premium estimated at $6.13)

That's roughly $1,000 a year back in your pocket compared with a big truck, and about $500 compared with a midsize SUV. Over five years of ownership, it adds up to a nice trip to the neighbor islands.

Skip the gas station altogether

If you want to get off gas completely, the all-electric MINI Countryman SE ALL4 is rated for up to 216 miles of range. Most Oahu drivers don't come close to that in a day, so you could charge at home overnight and rarely think about range.

To be honest, Hawaiʻi electricity isn't cheap either. An electric MINI makes the most sense if you have rooftop solar, a good place to charge at home or work, or you simply want to stop worrying about the price at the pump. I'm happy to sit down and run the numbers for your situation.

Smaller car, smaller footprint

Beyond saving money, a smaller, efficient car means fewer trips to the pump and less fuel burned on an island where everything, gas included, arrives by ship. Lots of my customers like knowing they're doing a little something for the ʻāina, too.

More ways to save at the pump

  • Combine errands into one trip instead of three short ones.
  • Keep your tires properly inflated; it's free and helps your mileage.
  • Ease off the gas in stop-and-go traffic instead of racing to the next red light.
  • Use a gas price app to find the best price near you before you fill up.

Let's find your fuel-saving MINI

Whether you want a gas MINI that sips fuel or an electric Countryman that skips the pump, I'll help you compare the options side by side and find the one that fits your budget. Mahalo for reading!
